About the Library

Our Vision

The Waterloo Public Library will be one of the top mid-sized public libraries in Canada, and will be a key partner in supporting literacy and the intellectual, cultural and economic vitality of our community.

Mission

The Waterloo Public Library is a place to grow! Through a team of friendly, knowledgeable and well trained staff, volunteers and trustees, WPL offers people of all ages innovative lifelong learning and leisure opportunities.

A Brief History

The Waterloo Public Library in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada was established in 1876 as a "Mechanics Institute."

In 1902 a grant was obtained from Scottish-American philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, to build a new library in Waterloo. On November 4, 1905 the Carnegie Free Public Library opened its doors. The Library's popularity grew rapidly and soon a Children's Department and children's programs were developed.

By the 1960s the Library had outgrown its location yet again. A new library building was constructed at 35 Albert Street and has been home to the Main Library since June 11, 1966.
